Rudi Womack Interview

Rudi Womack is the original creator of Imperial Odyssey. He’s the author of 5 Imperial Odyssey books and director of 9 Imperial Odyssey films.

Imperial Odyssey is in your blood. Take us back to the beginning.

I was a nerd kid. By was I mean still am. And I’ve always had an overactive imagination. The world is just more fun with zombies and dragons, and I guess I’ve always preferred it that way. When I was a kid I made up aliens called Zintonieans. They could fly, shoot fireballs, and turn invisible. Needless to say I’ve tweaked it a bit. But Imperial Odyssey has been around in one for or another since I was five years old. It has grown and evolved. Space is truly the final frontier and nothing would be better than escaping to a strange alien world. Since I don’t have the pocket change for a Saturn V rocket I was content to develop empires in my head. They eventually spilled onto paper, then onto movie screens, then onto the Internet. Its been like a forest fire ever since! The more IO grows, the more my heart and love for it grows.

How does one put so much detail, history, and depth into a series like this? How do you come up with it?

A lot of boring classes. I mean it! While my teachers were rambling about math and science, and while all the other kids were playing sports I was bored out of my skull. I’ve never been a good artist so I learned how to write… which, when I say “write” I mean it in the loosest of terms. But when a kid makes something up in kindergarten that carries all the way through College, you tend to develop and flush out ideas. Those ideas grow, other creative people get ahold of them, and next thing you know you’ve got a sci fi history more complete than anything else. I really never realized just how much stuff I’d come up with until I decided to put it all down on paper. Even then, it’s still not all written out! To create something like this it takes time, patience, loads of caffeine, good friends, dedicated fans, and the spirit of adventure.

This franchise is turning out to be a diamond in the rough. What’s your secret ingredient?

What is a story without a story? A movie without characters? I don’t make a sci fi universe. No sir. I make people. Doesn’t matter the race because, alien or not, they have strengths and weaknesses. Stuff everyone can relate to. It’s that simple. The characters of IO are the source of all the stories. You spend tons of time developing them, and soon their actions speak for themselves, which creates epic stories. The other successful part of IO is our diversity. Name a genre, and we’ll do it. Noir? Adventure? Romance? Action? We’ve got it. No other franchise can be a western one-day, a political drama the next, and a philosophical artsy story the very next. Imperial Odyssey does it. Because of that it has mass appeal because everyone can find something to their liking.

What’s the future of Imperial Odyssey?

Check the timeline. Lol. Bad pun. Imperial odyssey is constantly growing and evolving. What I love most is the contributions of others. Especially when they take the foundation of IO and run with it in a whole new direction. Imperial Odyssey was born in my brains but has grown online. I think with the direction media is going we can keep it alive by giving it to the fans. Its full of great contentment for everyone, sci fi freak or not. I’d love Imperial Odyssey to skyrocket. I’d love to see dozens of books and movies by fantastic artists. “Shoot for the stars” seems oddly appropriate.

Can you give us some final words for the fans?

Thank you! From the bottom of my heart! And if you start creating content, as many of our fans do, let me see it! I always get excited to see other people’s take on the IO universe. This is something we all build together and nothing gives me greater pleasure than watching it grow.

Also, the game.
